Lim Chang-yong of the Korean Baseball Organization’s KIA Tigers will have to do 120 hours of community service after his dangerous interpretation of a simple pickoff attempt.
During Saturday’s game against the Doosan Bears, Chang-yong tried to pick off Oh Jae-won on second base. No Tigers player was covering the bag, so Chang-yong instead fired his pickoff right at Jae-won’s head.
Chang-yong’s throw missed Jae-won, but just narrowly. The ball trickled into the outfield, but Jae-won was too stunned to even advance to third base.
Nobody had ever seen a pitcher do that before, and Chang-yong didn’t necessarily do a great job of making it look unintentional. He took a stutter step into his throw. It was a calculated decision that could have escalated into a full-out brawl.
The league suspended Chang-yong for three games and ordered him to do 120 hours of community service.
