Cincinnati Reds reliever Michael Lorenzen entered Friday’s game — his first since his father died — got two outs and headed into a clubhouse bathroom to collect himself.
Then, he stepped to the plate with two on … and did this:
He pointed up to the sky as he crossed home plate and came back to the dugout to high fives and one huge hug from catcher Ramon Cabrera. He then headed out for a curtain call from the fans at Great American Ball Park.
Here’s what manager Bryan Price said of the home run and the moment, via Cincinnati.com:
“If you’re around baseball and you’ve been here long enough, you’ll see all sorts of things that you think you’ll never see again or you never thought you would see. This falls under that heading. I never thought I would see something like that, as majestic and poetic and emotional as that moment.”
