Paige VanZant returns from UFC break to inflict stunning second-round knockout on Bec Rawlings
A brutal defeat by Rose Namajunas last December put the brakes on what had seemed an inexorable rise in the UFC for the 22-year-old former ballet dancer.
But after a successful appearance on Dancing with the Stars, VanZant returned to mixed martial arts with a stunning second-round knockout of Bec Rawlings on Saturday night.
Having faked a low kick with her right leg, the strawweight switched to her left and landed a stunning jumping switch kick.
Rawling collapsed to the canvas and VanZant finished the fight on the ground.
And the victor told Fox Sports: 'Going into the fight, I knew that she might have superior boxing to me and that's something I wanted to work on, not closing the distance and trying to rush her because she would have a really strong right hand.
‘I have landed it in training a few times and it is in my arsenal so I thought I might as well go for it.’
VanZant revealed that two of her corner were unable to travel to Canada - where Demian Maia submitted Carlos Condit in the main event – forcing a late change in her team.
‘There are trials in every training camp,’ she said. ‘But I don’t have any injuries and I’m ready to get back into it.’
