The Kansas Jayhawks snapped a 15-game losing streak on Saturday when they defeated Rhode Island, 55-6.
While some fans celebrated the win with a short-lived (and possibly ironic) rushing of the field, it was clear how much Saturday’s win meant to head coach David Beaty.
Beaty reflected on Saturday’s win after 2015’s 0-12 season and couldn’t hold back the tears.
He said:
“Well, I’ve never been through what we went through last year — that’s hard. That’s very — personally, that’s difficult. I’ve gotten emotional with those guys. It’s just hard. Obviously, I’m overjoyed for them. We don’t want to wait. We want to win. But I was proud of those guys. And for me, more than anything, we can’t make too much of it. It’s just one game.”
Beaty accept the KU job last season and found himself in an impossible situation, having to try to rebuild a program that was left in shambles by his predecessors Turner Gill and Charlie Weis. They entered the 2015 season with just 60 players on scholarship and finished 0-12.
The Jayhawks host Ohio on Saturday. They’ll look for their first 2-0 start since 2011.
