The last time Serena Williams wasn't No. 1 ...

Serena Williams lost in the U.S. Open semi-finals Thursday night to Czech player Karolina Pliskova. This stunning defeat means that that Angelique Kerber will surpass Williams as the top-ranked women’s singles player in the world, ending Williams’ 186-week streak at the top of the rankings.
One hundred eighty-six weeks. Think about that: For over three years, Williams has been the best in the world.
The last year that Serena Williams didn’t end her season as No. 1 was 2012. Do you even remember what was happening in 2012? Let’s take a walk down memory lane to see what’s changed and put in perspective just how incredible it is that Williams held onto the No. 1 spot for so long.

IN 2012:

  • Kanye hadn’t married Kim yet. In fact, they only started dating that spring. Yeezus hadn’t been released.
  • Donald Trump was still the host of a dumb reality TV show called The Celebrity Apprentice, which was in its 12th season at that point.
  • Hillary Clinton was still Secretary of State.
  • Obama and Romney were campaigning against each other for the presidency.
  • Gangnam Style was relevant.
  • Maria Sharapova wasn’t banned from tennis.
  • #Linsanity was happening.
  • Snapchat was only about a year old, and you probably weren’t using it yet.
  • The NHL was in a lockout.
  • Prince William and Duchess Kate hadn’t had their first kid.
  • We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift was the No. 1 song and the majority of people in this country didn’t think she was the worst.
  • Trevor Siemian was a sophomore in college, and it was Peyton Manning’s first year with the Broncos.
  • We were still excited about the iPhone 5, and it still had a headphone jack.
  • Riley Curry had just been born, and Ryan Curry wouldn’t be born for another three years.
  • The summer Olympics in London had just ended.
  • Tim Tebow was still a football player. And still with the Jets.
  • Drake being mopey and sad wasn’t played out.
  • Serena won her fourth U.S. Open.
