Gael Monfils is competing in the U.S. Open for two reasons — one, to win his first Grand Slam singles championship. And two, to leap around and do a bunch of fun stuff on the tennis court even if it makes little-to-no sense.
On Monday, Monfils jumped into a clock during his first round match and completely obliterated it. On Wednesday, Monfils turned his second round win over Jan Satral into a trick-shot highlight reel.
Get a load of this between-the-legs volley he pulled off during the third set.
The amount of extra work Monfils put in for that return was astonishing. He could have simply hit the ball with a forehand, but where’s the fun in that? That volley was wonderful.
Monfils would go on to win in straight sets.
