Colin Kaepernick kneels during the national anthem after fans boo him

Colin Kaepernick sat during national anthem before the San Francisco 49ers’ game last Friday, and he did so again on Thursday in San Diego. Kaepernick’s reasoning, as he told NFL.com’s Steve Wyche, is that he doesn’t want to “stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color.”

This time, he was joined by teammate Eric Reid.

Kaepernick was also hugged by teammates after the national anthem ended, per the Mercury News‘ Tim Kawakami.

Kaepernick gave Reid a hug after both stood up, and Nate Boyer also hugged Kaepernick. Several teammates came by to hug Kaepernick, also.

However, while Kaepernick received hugs from teammates, he was not warmly welcomed by fans. Boos could clearly be heard from the crowd when he ran onto the field for warmups.

Colin Kaepernick is booed as he takes the field for warmups in San Diego.

Per USA TODAY Sports’ Josh Peter:

Fans booed again when Kaepernick took the field for the 49ers first series and during the during continued to boo him before every snap.

This game may have a little extra controversy tied to it than others because it’s the Chargers’ 28th annual Salute to the Military night (planned before Kaepernick’s protest last week).

Update: Kaepernick stood and applauded when military members were honored, according to reporters at the game.

Kaepernick is still clapping, staring at the screen as soldiers in the stands are shown. "God Bless the USA" playing.

In a different preseason game on the same night — the Seahawks vs. Raiders matchup — Seattle’s Jeremy Lane appeared to join Kaepernick’s protest as he sat during the national anthem in Oakland.
