Western Michigan player nearly hands Northwestern a touchdown on crazy f...

Western Michigan escaped its first game of the season against Northwestern with a win, but the Broncos were a step away from handing a late touchdown to the Wildcats thanks to a bizarre play.
Western Michigan was up 22-21, and Northwestern drove down the field for a first-and-goal play, when Clayton Thorson fumbled at the goal line with under three minutes to go.
Broncos defensive back Davontae Ginwright picked up the bouncing football as it headed out of bounds … and for some reason, threw it back into the end zone. Northwestern pounced on it, think it had a touchdown …

… But officials ruled Ginwright had stepped out of bounds before the toss. Why would he have thrown the ball back into play? It might be one of those instinctual panicky moments in which you can’t think of what the rule is if the ball goes out of bounds or is run out by a defender in the end zone.
Lucky for Western Michigan, it didn’t matter.
