Serena Williams beat Yaroslava Shvedova on Monday at the U.S. Open to secure her 308th match victory in a major draw. That’s more Grand Slam match wins than any man or woman — Martina Navratilova notched 306, and Roger Federer has won 307. Williams is heading into the quarterfinals to face No. 5-ranked Simona Halep; if the world No. 1 can win the U.S. Open this year, she’ll surpass Steffi Graf’s 22 Grand Slam titles.
In addition to being decent at tennis, Williams is also a fashion designer. So it’s fitting that the outfits she wears to smash records — clothes Nike designs specifically for her, setting her even further apart from the other athletes the company sponsors — would be smashing, too.
But even when you’re the G.O.A.T., not all outfits are created equal. So let’s take a walk down memory lane and check out Williams’ sartorial choices from 2016, ranked “meh” to, in fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad’s words, “Queen of Slayville.”
