The Gamecocks have practiced for months for their season opener against Vanderbilt. The coaching staff meticulously planned every detail for that first drive. They probably should have worked more on the basics, though — like taking a knee.
Redshirt freshman running back A.J. Turner was making his college football debut on Thursday, and he received the kickoff deep into the end zone. Given the immediacy of Turner having to do something in his first game, it’s likely nerves played a role in the confusion over what to do after he caught the kickoff.

Oh my god, South Carolina. This was nearly ruled a safety
He was being told to take a knee the whole time, but Turner didn’t notice until he started to take a step out of the end zone. He stopped as quickly as he could and took the knee.
Turner was credited with the touchback on the field. The officials would review the play to see if the ball crossed the plane of the end zone, which would have been a season-opening, self-inflicted safety.
Luckily for Turner, he stopped just in time, and the touchback was confirmed.
