Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez pitched the game of his life on Sunday against the A’s.
Rodriguez, who hasn’t made it past eight innings all season, took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning with two outs. For a moment, Marcus Semien looked to be the third and final out of the inning. He hit a grounder back at the mound, which Rodriguez knocked down with his foot.
Rodriguez frantically looked for the ball and recovered to make a strong throw to first base that was ruled an out on the field.
In real time, it did look that Rodriguez got Semien in time, but the A’s would challenge, and replay clearly revealed that Semien was safe.
It took a matter of seconds for the umpires to overturn the call.
Rodriguez stayed in the game and got out of the inning on the next at-bat. But to lose a no-hit bid after a replay? That’s tough but fair. His decision to kick the ball, though — which was made in a split second — will probably haunt Rodriguez more. It was likely a routine groundout to second base if he let the ball go by him.
The Red Sox would lose, 1-0, in the ninth inning.
