Cardinals rookie Luke Weaver found himself standing among veterans Matt Carpenter, Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha during Tuesday’s game against the Mets in St. Louis. And after pitcher Jamie Garcia drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the second inning, the seasoned Cardinals put their hands over their eyes to mimic eyeglasses, presumably to congratulate Garcia for his batting eye.
But Weaver, who joined the big-league club less than two weeks ago, apparently did not yet know the ritual, so he had to learn on the fly. Like a tentative puppy taking its first steps, Weaver looks uncomfortable but hopeful as he peeks around at his teammates to see if he’s doing it right. Get those elbows up, son.
Weaver’s dominant minor-league stats suggest he’s got a long Major League career ahead of him, so he’s going to have plenty of time to get the glasses thing down.
